George Town, Penang
Description
A UNESCO World Heritage city since 2008, George Town blends centuries of trade and culture in its streets. Founded in 1786 as a British East India Company port, it grew into a vibrant mix of Malay, Chinese (including Peranakan), and Indian communities. Today, heritage shophouses line the lanes, bicycles drift past colourful murals (a contemporary tradition sparked in the 2010s), and hawker stalls serve fragrant curries beneath ornate facades. Temples with rows of small Buddha statues offer a quiet counterpoint to the bustle—history, flavour, and street art layered on every corner. We really enjoyed our long weekend there.
