Jakarta
Description
Jakarta was home for me from 2014 to 2018.
Many of these images were taken while walking home in the evenings from my office on Jalan Sudirman to my house in Senopati.
Most people thought I was crazy walking — given the smoke, smog and broken pavements — but it was often faster than driving, and it gave me the chance to capture the city as it was.
Jakarta is the heart of Indonesia. Most of the country’s economic activity takes place in the greater Jakarta region.
It is also an odd city. Elisabeth Pisani described Indonesia as her “bad boyfriend: infuriating, but you keep coming back.” For me, Jakarta has always felt like my bad girlfriend.
The images are of traffic jams and commuters, people hanging onto the sides of buses, the skyline and city streets under heavy tropical rain, street musicians, and, on the rare clear days, the mountains and volcanoes in the distance.
